From Usk to London: The Story of London Bus 4 Hire

There is something unmistakably special about seeing a classic red Routemaster travelling through London. These buses are more than a form of transport—they are internationally recognised symbols of the capital and an unforgettable part of British history.
At London Bus 4 Hire, we give people the opportunity to make these iconic vehicles part of their own story.
Where Our Journey Began
London Bus 4 Hire was founded by Martin and Julia in 2008, beginning with a shared passion for historic buses and a belief that travelling to an event should be just as memorable as the occasion itself.
At the heart of that beginning was RML2583, affectionately known as Bulgy—the very first bus in the London Bus 4 Hire fleet. Built in 1966, Bulgy marked the start of the company’s journey and remains a much-loved and important member of our collection today.
The company began in Usk, Monmouthshire, where our original depot and specialist engineering facilities remain an important part of the operation. From these beginnings, London Bus 4 Hire has continued to grow from strength to strength.
Over the years, we have expanded our fleet, developed our specialist restoration and engineering expertise and transported passengers for weddings, private celebrations, corporate events, major advertising campaigns, television productions and sightseeing experiences.
Expanding from Usk to Central London
As the business grew, London Bus 4 Hire expanded its operations from Usk into central London, allowing our heritage vehicles to become part of an exciting collection of sightseeing, dining and family experiences.
Today, our vintage buses are not only available for private hire—they also introduce visitors to London through several distinctive tour brands:
Round London Sightseeing Tour, showcasing London’s most famous landmarks from a traditional open-top Routemaster with live commentary
The Great British Tea Bus, combining traditional afternoon tea with a sightseeing journey through the capital
Magic Bus London, bringing together a themed bus journey, filming locations, interactive entertainment and a guided walk
Hamleys Family Tours, combining London sightseeing with live entertainment, quizzes and the magic of the world’s oldest toy shop
Each experience has its own personality, but they all share the character, atmosphere and sense of occasion that comes from travelling aboard an iconic London bus.
A Fleet We Are Proud to Own
Unlike many bus-hire companies that primarily operate as booking agents, we own and operate our own collection of vintage buses.
Our fleet includes traditional closed-top Routemasters, open-top buses and distinctive vehicles with their own individual histories and personalities. Some spent decades carrying passengers on London’s regular bus routes, while others have appeared at major events, in advertising campaigns and on television.
Every vehicle has a story. Throughout this blog, we will introduce you to our buses, explore their histories and share some of the fascinating details that make each one unique.
Vintage Bus Hire for Every Occasion
Our buses provide memorable transport and an impressive backdrop for occasions of almost every kind.
A classic red Routemaster is a practical and memorable way to transport wedding guests. With generous seating capacity, personalised destination blinds and a uniformed conductor, everyone can travel together while enjoying a truly iconic experience.
From conferences and hospitality events to staff celebrations and group transfers, our buses offer an exciting alternative to conventional coach transport and make the journey part of the occasion.
Few vehicles attract attention quite like a Routemaster. Our buses can be transformed with custom exterior branding, promotional displays and tailored interiors, creating a moving campaign that stands out on the streets of London.
Our fleet is available for films, television programmes, photography and commercial productions. Our experienced team can help identify a suitable vehicle for the period, setting and practical requirements of each project.
Whether it is a milestone birthday, school prom or private celebration, travelling together aboard a vintage London bus makes the experience feel special before guests have even reached their destination.
Group Transport and Private Tours
We can also provide private group transport and bespoke sightseeing experiences, complete with an experienced driver, uniformed conductor and optional professional tour guide.
Specialist Knowledge Behind Every Journey
Operating heritage vehicles requires far more than simply keeping them looking beautiful.
Behind every journey is a dedicated operation involving inspections, specialist engineering, route planning, cleaning and careful preparation. Our workshops also maintain and repair Routemasters for other operators across the UK, Ireland and Europe.
This specialist knowledge allows us to protect the history of these remarkable vehicles while operating them safely and professionally for a new generation of passengers.
Finding the Right Bus for Your Booking
We know customers can become attached to a particular vehicle after seeing its photographs or reading its story. However, our buses vary in seating capacity, layout, location and availability.
Rather than encouraging customers to select one specific bus, our experienced team considers the requirements of every booking and recommends the most suitable vehicle from our fleet.
This gives us the flexibility to provide the right capacity and style while ensuring the practical requirements of the journey are properly considered. Whichever vehicle is allocated, customers can expect the character, atmosphere and memorable experience for which London Bus 4 Hire is known.
