Bulgy's Story...
Affectionately known as Maud, RML2267 was built in 1965 and began life as one of London Transport’s lengthened Routemasters. The “RML” stands for Routemaster Lengthened. At 30 feet long, she is slightly longer than a standard Routemaster and provides seating for up to 72 passengers.
Maud came out of Aldenham Works in 1965 and initially entered service on London’s Route 76. She went on to spend nearly four decades carrying passengers through the capital and became a familiar sight on London’s streets.
In 1992, Maud underwent a major refurbishment and was fitted with a Cummins C-Series diesel engine. This modernised her mechanically while retaining the traditional appearance, open platform and unmistakable character of the original Routemaster.
In 1993, she was given Route 73 branding and allocated to Tottenham Garage. Maud remained on Route 73 until September 2004 and is believed to have been the longest-serving RML Routemaster to operate from Tottenham Garage.
Her final month in regular London service was September 2004, bringing an impressive 39-year career on the capital’s streets to an end. Following her withdrawal, Maud was purchased by Ensignbus.
In December 2004, Ensignbus offered 32 former London Routemasters through a special preservation raffle. Successful applicants could purchase a bus for £2,000, provided they could demonstrate that they had the space and financial resources necessary to preserve and care for it.
Maud was one of only a small number of former Arriva vehicles included in the raffle, as most of the buses offered had previously worked on Route 12 for London General or London Central. RML2267 was acquired by Andy Maslin of Swansea, who named her Maud in honour of his mother.
Maud later joined the London Bus 4 Hire fleet and has since been extensively refurbished inside and out. Great care has been taken to preserve her traditional Routemaster character while ensuring she can continue creating memorable journeys for future generations.
Today, Maud is based in Usk, South Wales and is available for weddings, proms, private tours, corporate events and other special occasions. She is supplied with a professional driver and conductor and can be decorated for weddings with external white ribbons and internal white silk flowers.
